History of the Rotary Club of Winnipeg-Assiniboine

More than 50 years of service, fellowship, fundraising, and community impact in Winnipeg.

Our Beginning

The Rotary Club of Assiniboine (Winnipeg) was chartered on June 18, 1973 with an initial membership of 33 business and professional men working or living in the St. James-Assiniboine area of Winnipeg.

While community service and fundraising have always been major activities, the club has also proudly recognized the skills of its members who made significant non-monetary contributions to the life of the local and international communities.

Members assisted as consultants to board members of a large senior citizens housing facility that had been experiencing financial difficulty, and supported projects including the Salvation Army and Canadian Hemophilia initiatives.

Service Above Self

Perhaps the club’s greatest strength is in the development of people, particularly young people. This has been achieved through support for Youth Exchange Programs, International Camps, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, and the creation of the district’s first Rotaract Club.

The club is proud to have sponsored more than 150 students, including participation in overseas programs.

Community and International Impact

Since its beginning, the club has participated in yearly fundraising to assist with a wide variety of projects, including financial support to underprivileged children, Scout and Guide camps, and major health-related initiatives.

International projects have included work in the Philippines, India, and disaster support through ShelterBox.

The club’s operating funds are separate from its service funds and are derived solely from membership dues and events.
